Preparing for capture

First some video has to be captured.
Composite source will be used. In SETTINGS, video input labelled Analog NTSC/PAL (Y in) should be selected.
In DECK CONTROL, open PREFERENCES and under EASY SETUPS select jpeg codec. On the bottom of the page select the location where the video will be recorded, and in ADVANCED options you can adjust video and audio compression settings. For jpeg codec, there are 5 quality settings available from approximately 1.2mb/sec to 5 mb/sec, but I could not use the best quality setting becuse my 2.4 gHz P4/500 mb ram/ Geforce 4 could not handle the task and frames were dropped. An even higher computer power might be needed to use other available codecs.

The incoming video can be monitored in DECK CONTROL, but once the capture starts the picture freezes and it is not possible to tell at all that the machine is capturing. No timecode, no red button, nothing. There is even no picture on external video monitor. Click anywhere on the desktop to stop the capture. Now the captured clip appears in left DECK CONTROL window and can be played on external video monitor, but not in Deck control window itself. Here the video can be only scrubbed, and the picture is small and low quality. A price to pay for the lack of processing power, I'd say, but for inexperienced user this can be quite frustrating.
On the other hand, capturing with 9 pin control is very solid and the control of the VTR is extremely fast and robust. Print to tape is also availble.
